SHARK Science

An Exhibition of Technology & Methods of Research

The tools of shark science are always evolving. We are building up our collection of both historical and contemporary research technology to show how data collection technique has changed over time.

Shark Tagging Technology

Satellite telemetry like these SPOT (Smart Position &/or Temperature) tags are used to obtain real-time movement data from sharks over a duration of time. Depending on the frequency of use (many white sharks only surface long enough for a ping once every few weeks), these tags can transmit data up to 5 years, giving us years of migratory tracking data.  Examples of shark tagging technology in Living Sharks Museum include SPOT tags, PSAT tags and SPLASH tags.
