The Farmer & the Shark explores the extraordinary life of local Martha’s Vineyard legend, Craig Kingsbury, and his impact on the production of Steven Spielberg’s classic, Jaws. The documentary focuses on the unique influence Kingsbury had on the film, from both behind and in front of the camera, as the embodiment of Robert Shaw’s iconic shark hunter, Quint. Along the way we also learn of the many Island locals whose ocean savvy and ingenuity were instrumental in transforming Jaws from a potential failure to the paradigm of the summer blockbuster. This fresh perspective on the Jaws story arrives just as the world is about to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this cinematic classic. Learn how fear turned to fascination in the wake of Jaws, and what it means for the survival of the ocean’s most iconic predator: the shark. Presented by the Shark Historian and Curator of Living Sharks Museum, Keith Cowley. This event will take place at the La Grua Center, 35 Water St. Stonington, CT.

Jaws Revisited: What Have We Learned about the Great White Shark?

Kick off Shark Week and join us for an exciting evening at Mystic Aquarium's Milne Center for Ocean Science & Conservation with Dr. Greg Skomal, a leading shark expert, accomplished marine biologist, underwater explorer, and author, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic film JAWS. In this insightful lecture, Dr. Skomal will explore how the film shaped our perception of the Great White Shark as a fearsome villain, and how years of research have worked to correct that narrative.

Dr. Skomal, a Mystic Aquarium Scientist-in-Residence, who has spent over two decades studying the behavior and ecology of Great White Sharks, has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of these apex predators. Through his work with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and his collaboration with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, he is leading efforts to protect these incredible sharks and their ocean habitats. He is the author of Chasing Shadows, and the Great White Shark Handbook. Books will be available for purchase & signing!

ABOUT THE FILM

Jaws @ 50 presented by National Geographic is the creative journey behind “Jaws,” the iconic 1975 Spielberg film based on Peter Benchley’s novel. With archival resources, it chronicles the film’s production, Benchley’s writing, and the subsequent rise of shark obsession among audiences.

At Mystic Seaport’s JAWSFest on July 5, the Living Sharks Museum will feature a pop-up "Jaws" Anniversary Exhibition tent on the Village Green showcasing original artifacts and memorabilia from 1975. Curator Keith Cowley will share knowledge on the film’s impact and the evolution of our relationship with sharks over the past 50 years.
